The Cloud Is the New Normal, says Amazon Web Services Exec

New Normal = The Cloud

'The cloud is the new normal,' Amazon Web Services executive says | Computerworld: "... Increasingly, however, AWS is finding that organizations are moving entire data centers, as well as their entire IT operations, to the cloud, Jassy said. An organization may have a lease coming up on a data center or need to do an expensive hardware refresh, and the pending costs or long-term commitment to infrastructure "that is kind of frozen in time," may cause it to more heavily consider the cloud, Jassy said. This is a trend that is accelerating at a very fast rate," he said. AWS' win of a government contract to run the services of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in 2013 caused a lot of other organizations to take notice, Jassy said. "A lot of customers would say if it's secure enough for the CIA, it is probably secure for us too," Jassy said...."

The Cloud, the Fog, the Computing Future

Modern 3G and 4G cellular networks simply aren't fast enough to transmit data from devices to the cloud at the pace it is generated, and as every mundane object at home and at work gets in on this game, it's only going to get worse. Luckily there's an obvious solution: Stop focusing on the cloud, and start figuring out how to store and process the torrent of data being generated by the Internet of Things (also known as the industrial Internet) on the things themselves, or on devices that sit between our things and the Internet. Marketers at Cisco Systems Inc.have already come up with a name for this phenomenon: fog computing. (source infra)

Forget 'the Cloud,' Computing's Future Is in 'the Fog' - WSJ.com:"....Here's the reality: Getting data into and out of the cloud is harder than most engineers, or at least their managers, often are willing to admit. The problem is bandwidth. If you're a company simply seeking to save the cost and headache of storing data yourself, the cloud is great as long as all you need to do is transfer data back and forth via high-speed wiring. But in the world of mass connectivity—in which people need to get information on an array of mobile devices—bandwidth is pretty slow. Any business that sends data to mobile devices, be it airline reservation systems for consumers or business data for a mobile sales force, grapples with the limitations of wireless networks. Overall, according to the World Economic Forum, the U.S. ranks 35th in the world in terms of bandwidth per user...."

Apple and the Cloud, A Missed Opportunity?

Apple and the cloud: A magnificent missed opportunity | ZDNet: "....The dateline alone is poignant. Written in October 2010, the email represents Steve Jobs’ final opportunity to provide his guidance on Apple’s future. Jobs resigned 10 months after this email was sent and died of cancer two months after that. But the even sadder part is how thoroughly Apple has so far failed to deliver on one of the key goals Jobs laid out in this, his final strategy document. Jobs wanted 2011 to be the “Year of the Cloud.” With the digital hub moving from the PC to the cloud, he said, Apple was “in danger of hanging on to [the] old paradigm too long.”...."

Google and the Cloud

HEARD ON THE STREET: Google: Weapon of Choice in the Cloud - WSJ.com: "...Google already has a reputation as a high roller. It recruits at a ferocious pace and spends billions of dollars on projects well beyond the core advertising business that still accounts for about 90% of its revenue. These include things like Web-connected glasses, self-driving cars, and home automation. Rising spending reflects what the tech business has become: a platform game. This involves the provision of mobile and cloud-based services backed by large networks of data centers. Consumers now stream music, photos and movies on the cloud rather than store all this content on their devices. Businesses, meanwhile, are shifting from using on-site software and data storage to services provided over the Internet. The networks required for all this aren't cheap, and Google's largest rivals are building them as well....(read more at the link above)

HP Operations Overhaul, the Cloud

Nascent Payoff for H-P From Its Operations Overhaul - WSJ.com: "Among the changes: H-P has replaced its old sales and human-resources software with easier-to-use, Internet-based programs from Salesforce.com Inc., Workday Inc., and other cloud providers. It has re-engineered its sales force to make it easier to buy technology and services from H-P and its more than 150,000 distribution partners. And it has redesigned its website to recognize PC and mobile visits, as well as adding thousands of consumer products and more video. Over the next five years, H-P aims to quintuple revenue now generated by the site. H-P doesn't disclose precise figures but says its web sales now make up a few percentage points of its total revenue."

Larry Ellison Gets the Cloud

OracleVoice: Larry Ellison Doesn't Get the Cloud: The Dumbest Idea of 2013 - Forbes: "... Ellison also mentioned his idea of the Network Computer and his launch of a company by that name many years ago to tap into the nascent world of interconnected devices: “we just didn’t know it was the cloud,” he said. “So this idea that I didn’t get or don’t get cloud computing is . . . interesting.” As for “interesting,” there’s an old proverb that says, “May you live in interesting times.” And I think that for cloud-computing companies competing with Larry Ellison and Oracle, life is about to get much more interesting than they would have liked." Microsoft, the Cloud, Satya Nadella

The Gigaom Interview: A chat with Microsoft’s Satya Nadella from before he was the (likely) next CEO — Tech News and Analysis: "...Cloud is perhaps the most secular growth engine out there because it scales with a number of devices, it scales with a number of apps, so it scales with the users and their devices and their apps. So that means all of those things are calling back home, they need more compute, they need more storage, and so therefore, cloud is the one thing you can bet on, is that there is going to be more cloud. Just because you can imagine all of those other things exploring. Now then the question is, what is that nature of the cloud? That’s where I think, those three things that I mentioned: one is proliferation of SaaS applications and in particular … the question of what’s the most ubiquitously used SaaS application? And the race is on for us and the industry and I think that’s where I think it will be something around communications and collaborations. That’s why Office365 is super important to us. The second thing that I think is also going to be true is, who are the scale players who can actually satisfy that demand? ... There is Amazon, there’s us, and maybe Google if they are serious about the enterprise infrastructure business...."

Google, the Cloud, the Internet Backbone

A natural progression: from cloud to internet backbone -- after all the internet is a cloud of networked computers/servers --

Does Google Want to Control More of the Internet Backbone?: " . . . By 2013, Google had invested about $23 billion in data centers, for example, and all that investment requires high-capacity backbone transport. In the third quarter of 2013 alone, for example, Google capital investment was about $2.3 billion, primarily for new data center capacity. But when a firm relies that heavily on cloud computing, it obviously will be able to justify operating a huge private network to support the performance of the data centers....the point is that large global enterprises always look at the cost and value of their networks... nor does either represent an attempt by enterprises to “control the Internet backbone” or compete with telcos. As with all other inputs, enterprises make “build versus buy” decisions. . . ." (read more at the link above)

Google, Googlers, the Cloud

Google CIO Ben Fried on How Google Works - Liz Gannes - Enterprise - AllThingsD: " . . . So, how much does Google, as an enterprise, really trust the cloud? “The overwhelming philosophy of my organization is to empower Googlers with world-leading technology,” said Fried in a recent interview. Based in New York, Fried took the CIO role at Google five years ago, after 13 years at Morgan Stanley. “But the important part,” Fried said, “is that we view our role as empowerment, and not standard-setting or constraining or dictating or something like that. We define our role as an IT department in helping people get their work done better than they could without us. Empowerment means allowing people to develop the ways in which they can work best. . . .”
